Dorothy Crippen Hurd Scholarship
Each spring, the Waco ISD Education Foundation selects one or more Waco High School seniors as Dorothy Crippen Hurd Scholars. The prestigious title recognizes outstanding academic achievement and leadership of Waco High graduates.
Scholarship Award
A Hurd Scholarship of $6,000 to $10,000 will be awarded to one graduating student from Waco High School each year. The student must have attended Waco High School in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. The award will be given over a four-year period. The student must be enrolled in a four-year accredited university. If required GPA is maintained, the awarded funds will be given directly to the university (one-eighth per semester) each of the four years.
Application
The application form includes a personal essay (1-2 pages) which demonstrates candidate's personal and academic qualifications, concept of leadership and philosophy of service. A resume is also required. Applications must be submitted electronically or postmarked by April 26, 2024. The application will be available online and will include all required criteria and application instructions.
Selection
A selection committee will be formed by the WISD Education Foundation Executive Committee. Included on the committee will be the Waco High School Principal, Waco High School Counselor, and a community representative. The winner(s) will be announced in May. Scholars are engraved on a plaque placed at Waco High.
Continuation
The student must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.2 each semester to qualify for grant continuation. The grant will be discontinued if the GPA has not been maintained for a semester, but is available again in subsequent semesters in which a 3.2 GPA is reattained.
